Rule No. 1: Two or more singular subjects connected by "and" usually takes a Verb in the plural.
Example:
Incorrect - Hari and Ram is here.
Correct - Hari and Ram are here.
Rule No. 2: If two singular nouns refer to the same person or thing, the verb must be singular.
Example:
Incorrect: The MD and CEO are coming.
Correct: The MD and CEO is coming.
Rule No.3: If the singular subjects are preceded by each ,every the verb is usually singular.
Example:
Incorrect : Every boy and girl were ready.
Correct : Every boy and girl was ready.
Rule No.4: If a plural subject is preceded by each of, everyone of, either of, neither of, one of the verb will be singular.
Example:
Incorrect: Each of them were present yesterday.
Correct: Each of them was present yesterday.
Rule No.5: if a plural subject is preceded by A no. of, the verb will be plural.
Example:
Incorrect: A no. of flowers is given to her.
Correct: A no. of flowers are given to her.
Rule No.6: If a plural subject is preceded by the no of, the verb will be singular.
Example:
Incorrect: The no. of flowers are given to her.
Correct: The no. of flowers is given to her.
Rule No.7: If a sentence has the following conjunctions, together with, along win, rather than, more than, as well as, besides, in addition to, accompanied by, in the company of, with , the verb will be in accordance with the first subject.
Example:
Incorrect: The teacher along with the students are going for the event.
Correct: The teacher along with the students is going for the event.
Rule No.8: If the sentence has the conjunctions either .. or/neither.. nor, the verb will be in accordance with the second subject.
Example:
Incorrect: Neither the teacher nor the students is going for the program.
Correct: Neither the teacher nor the students are going for the program.
Rule No.9: If two singular nouns refer two different person, the verb will be plural.
Example:
Incorrect:The president and the secretary of the committee is visiting us.
Correct: The president and the secretary of the committee are visiting us.
